Given that she made a rare public appearance at the MTV Movie Awards
With singer-songwriter Grey literally the go-to girl for choruses these days (see: Lupe Fiasco’s “Words I Never Said,” Dr. Dre’s “I Need A Doctor,” Diddy-Dirty Money’s “Coming Home”), it’s about time we got to hear a solo offering from her — especially given that she’ll be taking the stage at Chicago’s Grant Park for a Lollapalooza performance in August.
We love that the Alex Da Kid-produced “Dance Without You” kicks off with an upbeat tone and then evolves into quite the dark jam, complete with distorted guitar riffs and bewitching vocals, before just dropping out altogether at the very end.
“To me she’s an amazing artist,” Alex told us in December, while speaking of Grey. “She plays like nine or ten instruments. She writes amazing songs. She’s the real deal.”
Granted, this is not the type of song one can imagine hearing played on radio, hence, of course, the strange tune being a buzz single. If anything, “Dance Without You” will keep Skylar’s building legion of fans chomping at the bit for her first proper single and her debut LP, which is set to arrive this fall.
