After years of grinding on the mixtape circuit and a chance encounter with rap idol Kanye West, G.O.O.D. Music rapper Big Sean can finally rejoice in the release of his Finally Famous album debut. The 23-year old, who recently hit the top of Billboard’s Rap Songs chart with the Chris Brown-featured hit, “My Last”, is living out his highly sought after dreams, having even turned down a scholarship to Michigan State just to be where he is today.
Finally Famous finds the Detroit MC rapping about just that: finally becoming famous. After years of blood, sweat and tears, the young MC can proudly boast to family and even his high school teachers that his decision to forgo higher education was a good one. And for now, Sean’s enjoying the many fruits of his labor, celebrating life, ladies and the success that comes with actualizing your dreams. With guest appearances and production from famous hit-makers including: Kanye West, Chris Brown, Lupe Fiasco, John Legend, The-Dream, and No I.D., here’s four tracks from the album you should take a peek at:
1. Dance (A$$): The derriere is front and center as Big Sean commands everybody to “go stupid” on the dance floor with the club banger, “Dance (A$$)”. Sampling MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This”, the Detroit rapper calls on all the various girls of the world to make that “m———-r Hammer Time” on the comedic, innocuously repetitive dance track. You can’t help but have a good time shaking it to the handclap beat, as Sean dwells in his admiration for hind parts.
2. Marvin Gaye & Chardonnay: Mentor and protégé come together for the album’s most anticipated track as Kanye West, along with Atlanta rapper Roscoe Dash, hops on the Pop Wansel and Mike Dean produced “Marvin Gaye & Chardonnay”. “Marvin”, who’s become a bit of an inspiration in hip-hop as of late, sets a festive and seductive tone in the “party in the bedroom” themed song. While lyrically the track is far from the album’s strongest, and it’s ever so clear Yeezy and Sean probably sipped a little too much Chardonnay during the studio session, Dash and his catchy hook, surprisingly, saves the day making this a fun track for your iPod playlists.
3. High feat. Wiz Khalifa & Chiddy Bang: With his major label debut finally being released, Big Sean is on a high, literally and metaphorically. The “Finally Famous” MC teams up with his “Rolling Papers” tour mate, Wiz Khalifa, on the fittingly named “High.” The track, which makes great use of a sample of British singer Ellie Goulding’s “Fighter Plane”, features the young MCs waxing poetically about their favorite past time. Chiddy Bang joins the tour mates on the “mile high” ride that makes for a fun song to bump in your car, but it’s Khalifa’s singing that summarizes the song perfectly: “If you roll one up, I’mma roll one too. Oh you say you don’t smoke, well that’s all that we do. You be up in the club, I be up in the clouds.” For this track, “everything’s high.”
4. 100 Keys feat. Rick Ross & Pusha T: This gritty, deluxe edition track about survival in the city streets finds Sean teamed up with Def Jam/Maybach Music’s Rick Ross and G.O.O.D. labelmate Pusha T. While most of Finally Famous finds the Detroit MC rapping about the good life, he doesn’t shy away from rapping about the alternative means to “success”… at least in his city. “For that paper all the wrong things sound right” he raps in this mellow, beat-knocking track that plays out like a “bitter sweet symphony.”
