That was my helicopter coming in to take me to my set," Pete Wentz joked after spotting a chopper flying overhead as he sat down on Billboard's coach for a quick chat before Black Cards' afternoon set yesterday (Aug. 5).
After taking a leak behind our tent (rather than hiking to the johns 50 ft away), the former Fall Out Boy -- joined by fellow Black Card Bebe Rexha -- filled us in on playing Lolla for the first time, the changing sound of the band, and what fans can expect from Black Cards' still untitled debut, which he revealed will include guest spots from Chiddy Bang, Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees, Shaggy and Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship.
Wentz views the Lollapalooza gig as the launch of Black Cards' new sound, and used the gig to debut five to six new songs to the crowd. Wentz described one new song, "Take More Than I Can Handle," as having "a bass and low end that's just bumping... a mix of M.I.A. and Rage Against the Machine" with "zero of the politics of either."
Carrying the "truly escapist" vibe even further, Wentz says Black Cards is "just the opposite of Fall Out Boy." "My life went through this crazy hurricane. (Fall Out Boy) was about catharsis and emoting. This is about fun and having a good time and I've never done that before."
